Violin Sizes

Posted on Tuesday 6 March 2007

When I was doing my training as a Suzuki Violin Pedagogist years ago, I always had parents come up to me asking what violin size was appropriate for their kids - and we’re talking about kids REALLY, from pixie 3-year olds to 5.

It was kind of difficult on my part to assign a violin size knowing full well that these kids may soon outgrow their instruments.  I didn’t want to have parents think that I was assigning the wrong violin size to their kids if they had to change their violin sizes in a matter of a few months to a year.  And so, as always and as with any young, idealist pedagogist, I couldn’t help but consult my own mentor and violin teacher about this matter.

“If there’s no perfect fit, always, always get the size smaller for the child than the size bigger.”  The child can better-adapt his growing fingers/hand if he/she studies the basic finger patterns from a smaller violin to a bigger-sized violin, rather than the other way around.

Again, should any parent be confused, get the one-size smaller violin for your child than the bigger one.
