Violin Tuner

Posted on Thursday 8 March 2007

There’s a good violin joke going around in the internet that’s been used, misused and abused in the orchestra where I play. When everyone is playing 32 notes at lightning speed with presto agitato and you can’t catch up, it says that you should just simply stand up, hold your violin up and say earnestly and loudly enough for everyone to hear, “I think we should tune…”

Well, it might have worked a few times (amidst knowing guffaws) but knowing that all violinists in our orchestra now use a violin tuner, the joke doesn’t work anymore.

The use of a violin tuner can never be stressed too highly enough most especially with violin teachers. A violin tuner should be used when tuning a student’s violin because a violin tuned incorrectly will only develop the wrong intonation in the student - at least for one week until the next violin lessons!

Casio would be a good brand for a violin tuner. At least that’s what most musicians in the orchestra use. Now that everyone is using a violin tuner, we’re also using another joke as a lame excuse for a wrong note!
